Pirelli's involvement in cycling has deep historical roots. The company ventured into the experimental production of velocipede tires in 1890. By 1893, Pirelli had secured a patent for the Tipo Milano velocipede tire, named for the company's hometown, and by 1894, revenue from these tires contributed 12% to Pirelli's annual sales. A racing variant was added to the lineup in 1899. Moreover, Pirelli was a pioneer in cycling competitions from their inception, setting the stage for its later prominence in motorcar racing.
