Steering should feel calm.

Workshop-minded riders check headsets when steering feels rough, loose, indexed, or noisy under braking. Some riders ignore slight play because the bike still turns, but movement at the headset can affect control and damage parts. Standards vary by frame, fork, bearing type, compression system, and steerer design. Adjustment is delicate: too loose creates play; too tight can bind bearings or mark races. Water and sweat can shorten bearing life, especially indoors. If you feel knocking under front braking or notchiness while turning, ask for help before riding hard.
